Mark Freuder Knopfler is an English singer, songwriter, guitarist and record producer. He is known as the lead guitarist, singer and songwriter of the rock band Dire Straits. He pursued a solo career after leaving the group in 1987. Dire Straits reunited in early 1991, but disbanded again in 1995. He is currently a freelance solo artist. Knopfler was born in Glasgow, Scotland and grew up in Blyth, near Newcastle, England at the age of 7. After graduating from Leeds University and working for three years as a university professor, Knopfler co-founded Dire Straits with his younger brother, David Knopfler. The group has recorded six albums, including Brothers in Arms, one of the best-selling albums in history. After their disbandment in 1995, Knopfler began a solo career and produced 9 solo albums. He has composed and produced film scores for nine films, including Local Hero, Cal, The Princess Bride, Wag the Dog and Altamira.
