Tina Kotek (born September 30 in 1966) was an American politician currently serving as Chairperson in the Oregon House of Representatives. She is an active participant in the Democratic Party.
In June 2011, Kotek was picked to lead members of the House Democratic Caucus as their chairman. Following the fact that Democrats were able to win a majority of the House during the 2012 election and they elected Kotek to be speaker of the House during the 2013 session of the legislature. Kotek was elected Speaker in 2013 in the year 2015.
A Democrat, she serves as a member of the Oregon House of Representatives, representing a district in Portland, and was elected Speaker of the House for the 2013–14, 2015-2016 and 2017 session.
After Governor John Kitzhaber resigned in February 2015, elevating Kate Brown to the governorship, Kotek was named by The Oregonian as a possible successor to Brown as Oregon Secretary of State. Through a spokeswoman, Kotek denied interest in the job.
The year 2004, the was unsuccessfully running in the House’s 43rd District. In 2006 she received a seat at the House from the 44th District located in North as well as Northeast Portland. She won a contested three-way Democratic primary, gaining more than 50% of the vote. The general elections, however, was faced with just a tiny Republican opposition and defeated her opponent by about four-to-one. She was unopposed to re-election for 2008; in addition to taking her Democratic primary for the 44th district she also was able to win the Republican primary with write-in votes. This meant she did not have any Republican candidate and was assured of winning re-election. She was elected in 2010 and was facing an initial challenge, but won by a majority of the votes. A Republican candidate ran for the position however Kotek was elected the general election winner with nearly eighty percent of votes.
